366 Barnabæ Itenerarium: Richard Braithwait (1588–1673) was a royalist writer most famous for recording his pilgrimages in England in Latin and English verse. The work was first published in Latin as Barnaboe itinerarium (c. 1636). It was then published in Latin with English translations as Barnabees journall under the names of Mirtilus & Faustulus shadowed: for the travellers solace lately published, to most apt numbers reduced, and to the old tune of Barnabe commonly chanted (London, 1638). It was republished as Barnabæ itinerarium: or, Drunken Barnaby’s four journeys to the north of England, in Latin and English metre; wittily and merrily (tho’ an hundred years ago) composed; found among some old musty books that had lain a long time by in a corner, and now at last made public (London, 1716). The phrase, as translated by Brathwait himself, means “Know ye, I’ve declined most bravely, “Titubo—titubas—titubavi”—or “I reel, you reel, I have reeled.” Whyte will refer to Brathwait’s text again in his “New Version of Mr. Barnaby Harrington’s Apology for his Writings and Erratas,” below.
